The AI Resist List - Mapping Global Pushback Against Extractive AI

The main narrative around AI is that its trajectory is inevitable. The AI Resist List, launched in May 2026, documents the worldwide work that already disproves that claim.

The argument for AI inevitability has been remarkably effective. The main message remains consistent: AI is happening, AI cannot be stopped, and anyone who thinks otherwise is naive. Karen Hao, the initiator of the AI Resist List, has spent years arguing that inevitability functions as a political choice. This narrative forecloses debate, concentrates power, and is especially threatening because it insulates a small number of corporations from social accountability.

The AI Resist List is the practical answer to that framing. It is a publicly accessible, collaboratively built database documenting acts of resistance to the AI industry from across the world. The website tracks legal challenges, worker organising, community campaigns, artistic interventions, and technical tools. It showcases four main modes of resistance: Resisting, Refusing, Reclaiming and Reimagining.

The point is not that resistance always succeeds, but that it exists at scale on every continent. AI's supposed inevitability is therefore a story and not a fact.
